Role Overview
The Software Engineer will work on next-generation Windows device optimisations within an individual-contributor role. The work connects software and hardware behaviour with data-led engineering decisions, helping improve the fundamentals of Windows PCs.
- Analyse telemetry and trace data to understand software and hardware behaviour on individual devices and at scale.
- Investigate system issues using debugging and performance-analysis tools.
- Identify optimisation opportunities and contribute to designing and implementing improvements.
- Develop, test and maintain code across operating-system and application layers.
- Use data to evaluate solutions, validate improvements and support engineering decisions.
- Collaborate with team members and partner teams across the Windows ecosystem.
Eligibility & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline with proven experience coding in languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript or Python, or equivalent experience.
- Experience gained through coursework, internships or professional work in software development, debugging or systems analysis is preferred.
- Coursework, internship or project experience with operating systems or system-level development is preferred.
- Candidates must be able to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements.
- The selected candidate must pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
Key Responsibilities
- Study trace data and telemetry with support from experienced engineers to identify patterns in device behaviour.
- Debug system issues and assess performance using suitable engineering tools.
- Design and implement changes that improve Windows device experiences.
- Follow sound engineering practices while developing reliable, high-quality solutions.
- Test code and incorporate feedback from code reviews and design reviews.
- Work with partner teams to deliver improvements across Windows.
Skills Required
- Solid programming, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including testing, code quality and maintainability.
- Familiarity with debugging techniques and an interest in system performance and optimisation.
- Interest in learning how hardware, firmware, operating systems and applications interact.
- Familiarity with Windows internals, performance analysis or power optimisation is preferred.
- Exposure to telemetry, data analysis, statistics or cloud data platforms is preferred.
- Ability to learn new technologies and collaborate effectively on team projects.
- Ability to communicate technical ideas clearly and use data to support decisions.
