Role Overview
This role supports Chalhoub’s AI/ML squad in building and evaluating data-driven and generative AI capabilities. The Associate Data Engineer will work with Python, SQL, notebooks, machine learning models, LLM APIs and the Group’s enterprise GenAI platform, Alia.
- Prepare and clean datasets used for machine learning model training.
- Carry out basic feature engineering tasks with guidance from senior engineers.
- Assist with prompt design and test AI agents on the Alia enterprise GenAI platform.
- Support the development and testing of generative AI features using LLM APIs and AI tools.
- Assist with integrating machine learning models through REST APIs.
- Run model training and evaluation experiments while recording metrics and results.
- Support model monitoring and flag performance or data quality issues to senior engineers.
- Document datasets, experiments and observations to support reproducible work.
Eligibility & Qualifications
- Candidates must have a minimum of 1 year of experience in data science, machine learning or a related technical area.
Key Responsibilities
- Query, prepare and clean training data using SQL and Python libraries including Pandas and NumPy.
- Use Jupyter Notebooks for data preparation and machine learning-related tasks.
- Work with AI/ML engineers and apply engineering best practices under their guidance.
- Record experiment metrics, evaluation results and relevant observations.
- Identify and report model performance or data quality concerns to senior team members.
- Maintain clear documentation of datasets and experiments for reproducibility.
Skills Required
- Working proficiency in Python, including Pandas and NumPy.
- Working proficiency with Jupyter Notebooks.
- Working knowledge of SQL for querying and preparing data.
- Foundational understanding of machine learning concepts, feature engineering and model evaluation.
- Familiarity with REST APIs.
- Familiarity with cloud AI platforms such as Azure AI, Google Vertex AI or AWS SageMaker.
- Exposure to generative AI and prompt design is an advantage.
- Familiarity with AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot or Cursor is an advantage.
