Role Overview

This internship focuses on open research problems at the intersection of AI systems, storage and memory architecture. The selected candidate will work with advanced infrastructure, production data and pre-release hardware while developing and evaluating new approaches for demanding AI workloads.

  • Study next-generation storage and memory architectures for AI/ML workloads.
  • Work with NVMe and high-performance storage software stacks such as SPDK.
  • Examine memory and storage tiering, disaggregation and near-data computing.
  • Prototype and assess systems for performance, scalability and efficiency.

Eligibility & Qualifications

  • Candidates must be enrolled in a PhD, MS by Research or MTech by Research programme.
  • The programme must be in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electronics or Electrical Engineering, Robotics or a related field.
  • Applicants must have strong fundamentals in computer architecture, storage systems and operating systems.
  • Familiarity with storage technologies and stacks, including NVMe, SPDK, SSDs and memory hierarchies, is required.
  • Understanding of ML data pipelines or workload characteristics is required.
  • Applicants must be eligible to access export-controlled technology or software under applicable law. Some candidates may be subject to an export licence review before employment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Explore storage and memory architectures designed for large-scale AI and machine-learning workloads.
  • Use NVMe technologies and storage software stacks such as SPDK to investigate high-performance data access.
  • Research memory and storage tiering strategies for systems that use multiple levels of the memory and storage hierarchy.
  • Study disaggregated storage and memory architectures for large-scale AI systems.
  • Investigate computational and near-storage techniques, including quantisation, compression, predictive caching and data migration.
  • Build prototypes to test proposed storage architectures and system techniques.
  • Evaluate prototypes against performance, scalability and efficiency requirements.
  • Develop original research directions and contribute results intended for internal or external publication.

Skills Required

  • Programming proficiency in C/C++ and Python.
  • Strong understanding of computer architecture, storage systems and operating systems.
  • Knowledge of NVMe, SPDK, SSDs and memory hierarchies.
  • Understanding of ML data pipelines or AI workload characteristics.
  • Research ability to investigate open-ended systems problems and develop original ideas.
  • Preferred exposure to memory disaggregation, storage tiering, near-data computing or high-performance I/O.

Why Join Marvell

The internship offers access to real silicon, large-scale infrastructure, production data, advanced tools and pre-release hardware that may not be available in an academic setting. Interns will receive mentorship from senior architects and researchers, with support for presenting their work internally and externally. Strong research outcomes may also be translated into real products and future silicon rather than remaining limited to publication.
