Role Overview
This internship supports the YMS engineering team as it builds automation for logistics yards and improves workflows across gates, shipments, docks and inventory. Depending on team priorities and the intern’s strengths, the work may involve research and prototyping or backend feature development.
- Explore computer vision and OCR approaches for detecting trailer numbers, licence plates, cab numbers, USDOT numbers and seal presence at yard gates.
- Build and evaluate training data pipelines using public datasets and real-world gate imagery.
- Benchmark detection accuracy and document which capabilities can be developed in-house.
- Assess whether detection models can run on edge hardware such as NVIDIA Jetson or an equivalent device.
- Contribute to backend features for gate workflow logic, shipment management, dock door assignments or yard inventory tracking.
Eligibility & Qualifications
- Currently pursuing B. E./B. Tech or M. E./M. Tech in Computer Science, Electronics or a related field.
- Students in their final or pre-final year can apply.
- Applicants should have hands-on project or coursework experience involving computer vision, OCR or machine learning. Academic, personal and Kaggle projects are considered.
- Applicants should have solid programming fundamentals in at least one language, such as Python or Java.

Skills Required
- Programming fundamentals in Python, Java or a similar language.
- Familiarity with PyTorch or TensorFlow.
- Working knowledge of Python data libraries such as OpenCV and NumPy.
- Understanding of computer vision, OCR or machine learning through projects or coursework.
- Ability to learn new technologies independently and work with limited hand-holding.
- Clear written communication for documenting work and surfacing blockers.
- Curiosity about how software can solve practical operational problems.
- Web development experience in frontend or backend technologies is an advantage.
- Ruby on Rails familiarity, or experience with web backends, REST APIs, event-driven systems or database design, is an advantage.
- Interest in logistics, yard or warehouse operations, or supply chain technology, is an advantage.
