Role Overview
As part of the WEX Benefits Technology team, the Software Development Engineer 1 will help create employer benefits software and services. The engineer will learn the team’s development practices while contributing to production software, service health and automated quality engineering.
- Design, test, code and instrument software solutions with support from peers and managers.
- Build and maintain automated test frameworks and test suites for QA environments.
- Use Test Driven Development, Behaviour Driven Development, microservice architecture and Vertical Slice Architecture practices.
- Use AI-powered coding tools for code completion and refactoring while maintaining code quality.
- Monitor operational and quality metrics and identify opportunities to improve service performance and system health.
- Investigate existing systems and processes to find bottlenecks and improvement areas.
Eligibility & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field, or demonstrable equivalent experience.
- At least three months of work experience in software engineering.

Key Responsibilities
- Partner with engineering peers to complete tasks and deliver valuable software for customers.
- Support colleagues during technical deep dives and rapid incident response.
- Learn new technologies, share findings with the team and encourage adoption of useful practices.
- Apply team processes and engineering best practices to assigned work, and provide feedback that improves team performance.
- Analyse automated test results, troubleshoot failures and work with engineering teams to resolve defects.
- Expand automated test coverage for new and existing functionality across UI, API and integration testing.
- Improve regression coverage, test reliability and testing efficiency across QA environments.
Skills Required
- C# and Python, where applicable.
- Experience with or strong understanding of automated testing and test automation practices.
- Applied object-oriented programming, SOLID principles and software design principles.
- Experience building and consuming REST APIs.
- Familiarity with version control and CI/CD practices.
- Ability to integrate AI/ML-driven development workflows into the software development lifecycle.
- Understanding of TDD, BDD and microservice-based engineering practices.
- Strong communication, collaboration and continuous-learning skills.
The role also provides scope to learn technologies such as Azure, Docker, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, Helm, ArgoCD and Terraform. Additional learning areas include GraphQL, Kafka, relational and NoSQL databases, Angular or React, Selenium, API automation and CI/CD platforms such as Azure DevOps.
